Recommended Study Plan
Students in previous years have some specific advice for you, check it out!
- The web site associated with our book (Sadava), has an outstanding guide to effective studying:
SURVIVAL SKILLS
- DO THE WEEKLY PROBLEM SETS!
- Try to go through assigned reading before each lecture -- this will provide you with a conceptual framework for each lecture which will allow you to integrate ideas more effectively.
- After the lectures, try the corresponding end-of-chapter problems (Sadava). By actively using your knowledge in problem solving, you will improve your understanding of the materials.
- Try all the resources on Sadava Web site, most chapters have:
- Flash cards
- Tutorials
- Interactive quizzes
- on-line quizzes
- Attend TA and instructor office hours. Pick your favorite TA and make a point of coming to speak to them every week.
- I will provide practise exam problems. Do those problems in a realistic manner (ie book closed, no interruptions, with time constraint).
- Make up your own "exam" problems based on the lectures.
- Join or create a peer study group- working in groups can be invaluable for clarifying concepts.
- Keep up in 192 lab, and notice how the experiments relate to lecture material.
- Read your e-mail regularly-- when the instructors get good questions from the class by e-mail, we often cc: the answer to the whole class. Previous messages will be posted.
- Don't rely on last-minute cramming!
- ADVICE TO YOU FROM THOSE WHO KNOW.
